Mobile Food Truck License

food truck imageA mobile food truck refers to a motorized, mobile, self-contained vehicle that is equipped to cook, prepare and/or serve food. Food trailers also fall under this category, but are regulated differently than mobile food trucks.

What is the difference between on-street and off-street food trucks?

Off-street food trucks and food trailers are only permitted to operate on private property with the consent of the property owner.  They may also cater to private functions while parked on private property.  On-street food trucks operate in the same manner, but in addition are permitted to operate on public roadways in accordance with On-Street Mobile Food Truck Policy.  On-street food trucks are required to pay a parking permit fee when operating on any public roadway at any time.

What type of license is required to permit food trucks to operate on roadways adjacent to neighbourhood parks?

In 2017, Saskatoon City Council approved a one-year pilot program to permit on-street food truck operators (including food trailers) the option to operate in residential areas when parked immediately adjacent to a park.  Community Standards has established a set of guidelines that on-street food trucks must follow.  Additional parking permit fees apply to all licensed on-street food trucks.

Here are some example MAPS of various neighbourhood parks in Saskatoon that can used for reference on how the pilot program will operate.

We welcome feedback on the pilot program from residents, business owners, and food truck and trailer operators throughout the season.  This may be provided by emailing business.license@saskatoon.ca or by call Business Licensing at 306-975-2760.

Do I require a mobile food truck license if I only intend on operating at special events?

No. If your food truck will only be operating at special events or city festivals you do not require a mobile food truck license. If the base of operation (i.e. office space, truck storage, product storage, food preparation space) is located in Saskatoon then a home based or commercial business license is required.
