City of Saskatoon - News Releases


The Saskatoon Fire Department and Emergency Management Organization have concluded on scene of an unknown substance behind 1715 Idylwyld Drive North.

Test results of the substance found have confirmed it to be non-hazardous.

The civilian who had been directly exposed to the substance was assessed on scene by firefighter-paramedics before being transported to the hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure. The individual was in stable condition and was not experiencing any signs or symptoms of a hazardous exposure.

At approximately 8:32 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to an unknown substance located behind 1715 Idylwyld Drive North.

The Saskatoon Fire Department and Emergency Management Organization have responded accordingly with the following units committed to this incident: one fire engine, one haz-mat unit, one decontamination unit, one mobile command unit, and one battalion chief.

Haz-mat crews are working to identify the origin of the substance through a variety of testing processes.

 Saskatoon Fire Department responds to Car and Garage fire on 113th  Street West

 

At approximately 5:20 AM the Saskatoon Fire Department responded  to a report of a car and nearby garage on fire on 113th Street West.

3 Fire Engines, 1 Rescue Unit, 1 Aerial Ladder Truck, and 1 Battalion Chief responded.

Upon arrival fire crews found 2 vehicles fully involved as well as the exterior of the garage.

Crews performed a quick attack and had the fire under control in under 10 minutes.

At 5:48 am this morning, the Saskatoon fire department received multiple 911 calls reporting a garage on fire behind 1713 ave G north. Three engine companies, one ladder truck, a heavy rescue truck and battalion chef were dispatched to the scene.

Enroute crews reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the area.

Saskatoon Fire Department responds to a basement apartment fire on Confederation Drive

At 07:20 this evening The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a basement fire on the 700 block of Confederation Drive. 

Three Engines an Aerial Ladder a Heavy Rescue Truck and a Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene.

At approximately 1206 a.m Saskatoon fire Department responded to a structure fire at Anderson Paving. Saskatoon Fire Department dispatched 3 pumpers, 1 rescue truck, 1 aerial apparatus along with a battalion chief to the scene where there was heavy smoke  visible from the second level of the building. Crew did size up of the building and used an offensive attack. Crew breached the door and attacked the fire while encountering heavy smoke as well as intense heat. Fire was found on the second floor. Fire was under control in approximately 30 minutes.

At approximately 01:49 this morning the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting flames showing from a structure in the alleyway behind the 1400 Block of Avenue C North. Three Fire Engines, one Ladder Truck, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched to the incident.

The Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a house fire in the 1000 Block of Avenue F North at approximately 6:16 this evening. Three Fire Engines, one Ladder Truck, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched to the incident.

At approximately 6:13 A.M. The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a 2 vehicle MVC where one vehicle was reported to have rolled on it's roof.   One engine, one heavy rescue and a battalion chief responded to this incident,  crews stabilized and de-energized the vehicle and extricated the lone occupant by removing a door using the hydraulic tools.   The occupant was checked for injuries by the fire department paramedics, no injuries where reported on scene, however the driver was transported to hospital for further evaluation.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has concluded at the scene of a water rescue operation near the Victoria Boathouse.

At approximately 5:42 this evening, a firefighter-diver performing a hand search of the river's bottom located the body of a deceased male a short distance from where credible witness reports had identified his last known location as being. Upon recovery and removal of the body from the river, the scene was turned over to the Saskatoon Police Service and the Office of the Chief Coroner for further investigation.

At approximately 1:33 this afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call alerting to a person in distress in the area of the Victoria Boathouse.

One fire engine, two water rescue units, and one battalion chief were dispatched for response. Multiple river users witnessed the submersion of the individual; the initial 911 caller provided a description to fire dispatchers and remained on scene to direct fire department personnel to the individual's last known location.

Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a two vehicle collision at 16:20 this afternoon. Dispatch sent two Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief to Avenue C and Circle Drive.

On arrival, Fire crews verified two vehicles involved. One was a small car and the other a passenger van. The occupant of the car had exited the vehicle before arrival of the Fire Department crews. The van was on its side with the single occupant still inside. It was being supported by multiple bystanders to prevent it from rolling further onto its roof.

At 12:40 This afternoon The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a collision between a Truck and a Mini van on Kensington Blvd. 

An Engine a Rescue Truck and a Battalion Chief were dispatched and responded to the scene.

At approximately 11:42 pm tonight, Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls of a fire in the area of 20th street and ave H south. Three engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck and a battalion chief were dispatched. On arrival, fire crews found a garage with heavy smoke and flames at the rear of 326 ave H south. Fire crews began an immediate attack and were quickly able to bring the fire under control.

At approximately 11:42 pm tonight, Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls of a fire in the area of 20th street and ave H south. Three engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck and a battalion chief were dispatched. On arrival, fire crews found a garage with heavy smoke and flames at the rear of 326 ave G south. Fire crews began an immediate attack and were quickly able to bring the fire under control.  

There were no injures as a result of the fire.

Just after 2:00 pm this afternoon Saskatoon Fire Department received 911 calls about an exterior fire at St. Frances elementary school daycare , 202 Willow street east. Three Fire engines one Aerial ladder truck one heavy rescue truck one battalion Chief and one Fire Investigator unit were dispatched to this incident.

The Saskatoon fire Department received a 911 call reporting a fire in a large commercial storage building at approximately 01:07 this morning. Three Fire Engines, one Ladder Company, one Rescue Unit, a Battalion Chief and a Fire Investigator were dispatched to the incident.

At approximately 02:24 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle on fire in the alley behind the 300 block of Blakney Crescent.

At 02:20 this morning, Saskatoon Fire Department received a call for a single vehicle MVC. It was reported to be on fire and possibly containing occupants.

Two Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene at Arlington Avenue and Main Street.

The first Engine and Rescue Unit arrived on scene to find the passenger car fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews quickly contained and extinguished the fire so they could complete a primary search throughout the vehicle as quickly as possible. No occupants were found inside. 

August 8, 2019 - 3:29am

At approximately 10:01 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke coming from a garage in the 2000 block of St. Henry Avenue, not St. Charles Avenue as was previously reported. 

Three fire engines, one heavy rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, and one battalion chief were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon confirmation of a fully involved structure, one fire investigation unit was also dispatched for response.

Saskatoon Fire Department is responding to a reported garage fire on the 2000 block of St Charles Avenue.  Dispatched to the scene are 3 Engine Companies, a Ladder, al Rescue and a Battalion Chief. Callers report the garage is fully on fire and responding fire crews are spotting smoke from a distance.

At approximately 8:37 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of Avenue F South and 19th Street West. One person was reported to have been trapped inside one of the vehicles involved.

At 8:38 pm tonight a Saskatoon Fire Department engine company was returning from a call when they noticed the smell of natural gas at the intersection of 22nd st and Idylwyld Dr. The crew investigated and heard gas leaking from a natural gas valve cover at this intersection. A ladder truck and battalion chief were dispatched to the scene. The ladder crew using gas detection equipment determined there was a high concentration of natural gas present.

Sask Energy was called and determined the gas was leaking from a underground valve.

The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at 12:59 today, Three fire engines, One ladder  truck, One heavy rescue Unit and a battalion chief responded to the incident.

On arrival crews found a extinguished fire in the garage, One engine and a ladder truck remained on scene to check for extension and preform overhaul.

The home owner reported that he heard a pop and saw smoke coming from his garage, he called 911 then used his garden hose to attempt to  extinguish it.

At Approximately 1:16 this afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a smell of smoke in the Western Development Museum.

Three fire engines, one heavy rescue unit, one aerial ladder and one battalion chief were dispatched to the incident.

Carbon monoxide alarms are intended to alert you to the possibility of an odourless, colourless, tasteless, and poisonous gas in your home. Be sure to become familiar with the sound of your carbon monoxide alarm.

“Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed outside each sleeping area and are most effective when interconnected throughout your home,” says Fire Chief Morgan Hackl.

The Saskatoon Fire Department wishes to advise members of the public of a closed family function with Brayden Schenn of the St. Louis Blues and the Stanley Cup that is occurring at Fire Station No. 1 on Friday, July 5, 2019.

Restrictions will be in place at Fire Station No. 1 for the duration of this function and members of the public will not be provided entry.

It is requested that consideration is given to the wishes of the Schenn family, allowing Brayden time to celebrate with his dad, Acting Battalion Chief Jeff Schenn, among friends and family.

At approximately 1040 this evening Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a fully involved shed fire at the rear of 216 Ave F S. Fire was quickly extinguished by fire personnel.  There was a small extension onto a neighboring shed which was also quickly extinguished. Crew was on scene for close to an hour doing overhaul and extinguishing hot spots. A Fire investigator was called to the scene and was still determining a cause and getting a damage estimate

At approximately 2 am this morning, The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a fire in the basement in a house at 204 Ave. E South. Three Engine Company's, an Aerial Ladder, a Rescue Engine and a Battalion Chief responded. Crews made a quick interior offensive attack and extinguished the fire. A search was conducted and there were no occupants found in the home. 

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

There was a Fire Investigator called out to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Damage estimated at $50,000

The Saskatoon Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors of safe practices for purchasing, enjoying, and disposing of fireworks. This Canada Day, Monday, July 1st, low-hazard fireworks can only be discharged on private property between the hours of dusk and 11:00 p.m.

Low-hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use and include roman candles and sparklers, among others, and travel less than 50m (160ft) high.

At 2:50 pm Sunday afternoon, Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a reported two vehicle MVA on the Broadway Bridge.

One Engine, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and a Battalion Chief responded to the scene. 

On arrival,  paramedics from the engine  assessed the occupants from the vehicles and determined there were no serious injuries.

Fire crews had to use the winch from the Rescue Engine to pull the vehicle away from the concrete barricade to enable one occupant to exit the vehicle.

At 23:15 Friday night, Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a report of two passenger vehicles fully involved in fire, up against a business in the North end. The incident occurred at 854 47th Street East. Three Engines, one Ladder Company, one Heavy Rescue unit, and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the scene.

The Saskatoon Fire Department advises members of the public that the South Saskatchewan River’s water level is low as a result of reduced discharge rates.

Recently, the Government of Canada has recorded the primary water level on the South Saskatchewan River at Saskatoon to be approximately 2.1 metres with a discharge rate averaging between 70 and 80 cubic metres per second.

Just before six O'clock this evening, the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a two vehicle collision at 8th Street and Eastlake Avenue. One Engine and one Rescue Unit  were dispatched. 

On arrival, the Engine crew assessed the scene and quickly determined the two occupants from one of the vehicles had already safely exited and were uninjured. The driver of the second vehicle had also exited but had left the scene. It is unknown if the driver had received any injuries.

Saskatoon Fire Department responds to a house fire at 121 Avenue X South.

At approximately 7 am this morning, The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting smoke coming from a house on Ave X South. Three Engine Company’s, an Aerial Ladder, and a Rescue Engine responded. Crews made a quick offensive attack and extinguished the fire. A search was conducted and there were no occupants found in the home.  

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

There was a Fire Investigator called to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Saskatoon Fire Department is responding to a reported house fire in the 100 block of Ave X South.  Smoke was reported from a house by a passing City of Saskatoon Transit supervisor resulting in the dispatch of 3 engine companies, a ladder company a rescue company and a battalion chief. 

First arriving officer observed heavy smoke coming from and house and order fire crews to investigate.  Fire crews are actively suppressing the fire and searching for any occupants.

No damage estimates of fire cause available at this time.

A fire investigator has found the cause of a fire that occurred on June 5, 2019 at a business located at 126 Wheeler Street to be accidental in nature as a result of the inadequate maintenance of an aluminum dust collection appliance. It is believed that static electricity sparked the ignition of the aluminum dust as it passed through a filtration system.

The exercise is intended to provide a hands-on learning experience to F.I.R.E Cadets on safely using a fire extinguisher.

At approximately 8:13 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke and flame coming from the front of a house located at 1138 Avenue P South. One occupant was reported to have self-evacuated and left the scene.

Three fire engines, one heavy rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, and one battalion chief were dispatched for immediate response. Two fire investigation units were later dispatched to the scene upon confirmation of a working structure fire.
