Meet the artist of the Sutherland paddling pool mural on Thursday, July 25, 2019
The City invites the public to view Saskatoon’s very first paddling pool mural on the basin of the Sutherland paddling pool (128 113th Street West) and meet the artist who created it.
The showing will take place on Thursday, July 25, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (come and go format) with an artist talk happening at 10:15 a.m.
The “Sutherland Pond” artwork is a mural created by local artist, Devon Plett. Neighbourhood Planning worked in collaboration with paddling pool users to draw their favourite water based creature or plant. The students of Sutherland School also helped to identify the mural elements that were their favourite. Overall there were almost 100 children engaged in the mural concept. The artist then took the information and designed and painted the mural on the pool basin.
"Sutherland Pond” is the result of recommendations from two City-led initiatives:
- The Sutherland Neighbourhood Safety Report recommended working with local youth to develop a mural concept. The resulting mural would “celebrate the neighbourhood and its young people and encourage ownership and respect of the park.” A unique twist was researched and a local artist took the concepts and elements put forward by the youth and painted a mural on the basin of the paddling pool.
- The Sutherland Local Area Plan (LAP) report included reducing the opportunity for crime to occur using the principals of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

The paddling pool will open to the public at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2019.
