Over 800 leading experts, community leaders, elders and youth are coming together in Saskatoon today for the Wîcihitowin (wee-chee-HEE’-toe-win) Indigenous Engagement Conference.

Reaching its highest attendance yet, the conference focuses on responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and how to address Indigenous engagement and inclusion issues. The conference also aims to build allies in the community and honour Indian residential school survivors, missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, sixties scoop and day schools.

Following a request from the City of Winnipeg, twenty workers from Saskatoon Light & Power and the Parks Division will travel tomorrow to help clean-up efforts in the Manitoba capital.

“We are all very proud of our staff for volunteering to leave their friends and families,” says City Manager Jeff Jorgenson.

“When the call went out asking for anyone interested to go to Winnipeg, there were more volunteers than spots available. This speaks to the dedication of City workers willing to help our neighbours during a time of need.”

The City and Kahkewistahaw First Nation have cleared a path to designate the First Nation’s land at 1215 Claypool Drive as an urban reserve.

The City will host a special signing ceremony on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. in Council Chambers for the Kahkewistahaw First Nation Chief and Council, the Mayor and the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners to come together to formally sign the Agreements and honour the relationship between Kahkewistahaw First Nation and the City.

Lorne Avenue, between Hilliard and Isabella streets, will be fully closed on Wednesday, October 16, starting at 9:00 a.m. to replace a water and sewer connection. This work is expected to take one day to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Queen Street will be closed between 8th and 9th avenues starting at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15 for steel unloading. Detours will be in place. This work is expected to take two days to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Direct service from the Special Events Stop (outside the 2nd Avenue Lofts at 23rd Street and 2nd Avenue) to see Dallas Smith at SaskTel Centre on Tuesday, October 15,  is available at the following times:

· 7:05 p.m.

Post event drop-off is the downtown terminal and regular fares apply ($3.00 per trip). Transfers and passes are also accepted.

Mr. Justice R.W. Elson today ruled on the application of the owner of 166 Beechdale Crescent for an injunction to prevent the demolition of his property. 

An injunction was not granted by the Court. 

The City can proceed to demolish the property. However, the Court’s decision does not guarantee that the property will be demolished.

Demolition will depend on whether a plan can be formulated with the City to determine if the property can be remediated safely, legally and quickly.

Fall street sweeping prevents thick leaves from collecting in gutters that cause flooding in the spring. Roads are selected by their dense tree canopy and risk for flooded street drains.

While more roads were added to the schedule this year overall, only the leafiest ones in these neighbourhoods are included: Buena Vista, Caswell Hill, City Park, Exhibition, Holiday Park, King George, Mayfair, Nutana, Riversdale and Varsity View. Look up your street on our new area maps at saskatoon.ca/sweep.

The City of Saskatoon’s three golf courses (Holiday Park, Silverwood, and Wildwood Golf Courses) are in the process of closing for the season to ensure that maintenance requirements can be completed before winter, and that the courses are in good condition for 2020. The City would like to thank all patrons for their support during 2019.

After a summer of renovations, the Saskatoon Field House will re-open its doors to the public on Tuesday, October 15, at 6:30 a.m. Over the last several months, the Saskatoon Field House has been closed while undergoing renovations with the goal of improving the experience for track and field athletes, as well as both local and visiting customers, while also ensuring the nearly 40 year old facility continues to serve the residents of Saskatoon now, and for many more years to come.

The northbound lanes on Idylwyld Drive North will be completely closed between 25th Street and 31st Street starting at 9:00 am on Monday, October 14 for resurfacing. The work is expected to take approximately five days to complete.

The southbound lanes will accommodate both southbound and northbound traffic. Motorists are advised to plan for delays and use alternate routes if possible.

The Landfill’s winter hours of operation will begin on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. The facility, located off Valley Road, south of 11th Street, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.

Residents and commercial customers are reminded to follow all signs and/or instructions from Landfill staff. For information about rates and materials not accepted at the Landfill, visit Saskatoon.ca/landfill.

With online platforms such as AirBnB and VRBO becoming popular accommodation options for both residents and visitors, the City is reviewing the existing bylaw regulations for short term rentals.

Short-term rentals include all rental arrangements in a residential dwelling where the host receives compensation from a guest that stays less than 30 days.  Examples include vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts and AirBnBs.

With good weather forecast, this long weekend should be great to enjoy one last round of golf, clean your garden and drop off at one of the compost depots, or enjoy fun family times at one of the City’s Leisure Centres.

City Hall:  All Administrative Offices are closed. City Hall reopens Tuesday, October 15 at 8:00 a.m.

Pay Parking Stations: No payment is required on Monday, October 14.
Reminder: motorists are still required to park their vehicles within the posted time limits for the area.

City Council, at its regular business meeting held on September 30, 2019 opted to maintain the list of acceptable items, minus black plastics and polycoat (e.g. disposable coffee cups), as recommend by the Administration. This decision comes during a wave of uncertainty in the global recycling markets, driven by restrictions imposed by the Chinese Government, falling oil prices, and weak market prices in the plastics market.

A Queen’s Bench judge has allowed the owner of a Briarwood home – already slated for demolition – more time to file information and evidence to support the property owner’s request for an interim injunction or delay on the home’s demolition.

An injunction has not been granted.

The City of Saskatoon has recovered roughly $400 thousand in funds that in August were directed to a fraudster’s bank account through a fraud scheme. 

City Manager Jeff Jorgenson says the City continues to actively work with law enforcement,  banks, and its legal team to recover the remainder of the stolen money.

“There is an important court hearing taking place this week in Toronto,” Jorgenson says.  “It’s expected there will be further movement on the return of more funds following that hearing. For now, the funds still remain frozen in various bank accounts.”

The City wants to warn residents about an identified scam involving phone calls made from a 1-877 number appearing to come from Saskatoon Light and Power.

The message aggressively threatens to disconnect the resident’s power if payment for what they are saying is 'an overdue account' is not made immediately. The scammer states that the resident's account has been overdue for a number of months, then stating the amount owed.

Flags are flown at half-mast to honour police and peace officers killed in the line of duty.

Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day is marked every year in Canada on the last Sunday in September. The day pays tribute to the hard work and sacrifices police and peace officers make to keep Canadians safe.
