The Sid Buckwold Bridge remains on schedule to fully reopen to traffic in October. The first of a two-year complete bridge rehabilitation began in April and includes deck repairs, new asphalt, new barriers, walkway widening, a new drainage system and resurfacing of the Idylwyld Drive ramps over 19th Street.

Saskatoon Transit’s ClassPass program is a resounding success! The numbers are in after two full years of offering the program, proving it's been well received. Since the program’s inception, over 1,000 requests have been approved - providing free transit services to 26,451 students for class field trips. Most field trips take place in May and June with 2,256 participants in May 2019 and 2,323 participants in June 2019.

Starting today, Tuesday, September 10, 2019, crews will begin pruning trees on civic property in the Central Business District and Riversdale as part of the City’s Boulevard Tree Maintenance Program. Pruning will begin in Eastview and Greystone Heights at a date still to be determined.

Saskatoon Transit works to anticipate the areas of growth in the City and puts a plan in place to accommodate for busy routes. Nonetheless, bus riders are reminded during this time of year that full buses can be expected as students find the routes and times that work best.

City crews have begun annual winterization of the 450 irrigation systems in Saskatoon parks and along roadway streetscapes. Winterization is an important maintenance procedure to help ensure the longevity of the City’s irrigation infrastructure.

Irrigation winterization involves the use of large compressors that force air through the irrigation system, removing any residual water so it will not freeze within the underground pipes. The force of compressed air exiting through sprinkler heads may pick up and propel debris within the work zone.

The City wants to warn residents about an identified scam involving phone calls, texts or emails appearing to come from Saskatoon Light and Power. The message indicates that the resident either has a utility refund or that they are owed money due to over-billing, a web link is then included to provide your banking information. Scammers typically use the information they gather this way to get money or commit identity theft.

A number of concerned residents have contacted the City on this matter.

While all pool programming is canceled during these hours, the multipurpose room and weight room will remain open, with all dry programming continuing as scheduled.

Lawson Civic Centre undergoes regular maintenance to ensure the safety and enjoyment of its patrons.

The City of Saskatoon will be hosting Fall Freestyle, the annual skateboarding event featuring music, pizza, prizes, and skateboarding demonstrations, on Saturday, September 7, 2019.

All ages are welcome to attend this FREE event, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Lions Skate Park in Victoria Park (next to Riversdale Pool at 822 Avenue H South). Remember to wear a helmet and bring your own skateboard and safety gear.

Come learn the basics of skateboarding and see some amazing demonstrations from experienced skateboarders.

The province-wide pruning ban for elm trees ends today, Sunday, September 1, 2019. The pruning ban is in place each year from April 1 to August 31 to ensure that elm bark beetles, which transmit Dutch elm disease, are not attracted to freshly-pruned trees when the beetles are most active.

The City is resurfacing Acadia Drive from 14th Street East to McKercher Drive beginning on Tuesday, September 3. The work will be completed in phases and is expected to take approximately 6 days, weather permitting and barring unforeseen circumstances.
Resurfacing will begin at 14th Street East and progress eastward to McKercher Drive. Detours will be in place and affected residents and nearby schools have been notified.

The City of Saskatoon has recovered roughly $380 thousand in funds that earlier this month were directed to a fraudster’s bank account through a fraud scheme. The vast majority of the remainder of the stolen money remains frozen by court order.

“Recovery of these funds continues to be a top priority and we’re encouraged to have over a third of the stolen money returned this early in the process,” says Interim Chief Financial Officer Clae Hack.

“Of course we’re very encouraged with this rating,” says Clae Hack, Interim Chief Financial Officer. “The rating agency points to a ‘strong and diversified’ economy in our city, the fact we’ve kept debt ‘minimal’ and are able to pass budgets before the start of the fiscal year as benefits.”

Following an extensive veterinary examination, the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo has made a difficult decision to next week say goodbye to Ma the Capuchin Monkey.

“We don’t take a decision like this lightly,” says Zoo manager Tim Sinclair-Smith. “We know announcing this makes many of us uncomfortable about the animals we love and care for however Ma’s health and quality of life continues to decline and we have made the medical and humane decision to let her go.”

In a given year, the City cleans out between 3,000 and 4,000 service lines connecting residential properties to the City’s sanitary sewer system. The sanitary sewer system is like a giant funnel with over 75,000 connections all directed to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When individuals put harmful things down the drain it can quickly become a significant problem in the sewer system.
