City Council is investing over $61 million this year for rehabilitation, maintenance and operations to make more of Saskatoon’s streets, bridges and sidewalks, smoother, safer and longer-lasting.

“That’s more roads repaved, sidewalks rebuilt, streets swept, and snow and ice cleared,” says Angela Gardiner, General Manager of Transportation and Construction.

“Over the past five years, we’ve made building better roads our top priority. The goal is to rehabilitate Saskatoon’s roads and continue to maintain them appropriately so they last.”

As work nears completion on the McOrmond Drive and College Drive interchange, crews will be closing the loop that allows eastbound traffic on College Drive to go northbound on McOrmond Drive for approximately two days. The loop will be closed from Saturday, May 4 until mid-afternoon Monday, May 6.  

To go northbound on McOrmond Drive, eastbound traffic on College Drive will continue onto the exit ramp and turn left at the stop sign on top of the interchange.

City Council will put into practice a new Code of Ethics following recommendations from the Saskatoon Municipal Review Commission (MRC) and a series of Council discussions.  Council approved Bylaw 9537, The Code of Ethical Conduct for Members of City Council Bylaw, 2019 (Code) at its regular business meeting April 29, 2019.

The Code unites the 2012 Code of Conduct, the 2017 Code of Ethics Bylaw, and the recommendations of the MRC’s Municipal Code of Conduct Committee Report, dated February 11, 2016.

The City is pleased to announce Artists in Place: The Bunkhouse Project (The Bunkhouse Project), an artist-in-residence pilot program taking place in the historic Bunkhouse at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo. 

Sponsored by the City of Saskatoon, with a grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Artists in Communities program, several local artists were selected to set up studios in the Bunkhouse for a year-long residency.

With warmer temperatures on the way, the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo will be switching to summer hours on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.  The extended hours mean the Forestry Farm Park gates will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the Zoo will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.  The last person will be admitted to the Zoo one hour before close.  Parking fees also come into effect on May 1.  The public is reminded that the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo is a pet-free park.

Bus Rapid Transit — or BRT — routes will travel down 1st Avenue downtown and Broadway Avenue in Nutana.  City Council made the decision at its regular business meeting Monday, April 29. 

Council opted for BRT dedicated lanes on 1st Avenue downtown and in mixed traffic for Broadway.

The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991 and commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace related hazards and incidents.

As the spring clean-up continues in Saskatoon, residents are encouraged to put their waste in the right place. To help with this, the City is preparing to kick off another Green Cart season, providing residents the opportunity to divert their yard and food waste from the Landfill. The optional fee-for-service program offers convenient front-street bi-weekly collection from May 3 to November 7, 2019 for current Black and Blue Cart customers.

Lane restrictions remain in place on Highway 16 westbound at 71st Street until crews can complete the repairs to signage. This work was delayed due to heavy wind and is expected to resume today.

Highway 16 westbound is reduced to one lane at 71st Street for repairs to signage. Due to heavy wind, the repair is delayed until early morning.

We expect the road restrictions to be lifted Thursday morning by 9 a.m.

Road users are reminded to reduce speeds, stay alert and mind posted signage and barriers when encountering a construction zone. Thank you for your patience.

The City reminds residents that the provincial ban on pruning elm trees is in effect until Saturday, August 31, 2019.

The ban ensures that elm bark beetles, which transmit Dutch elm disease (DED), are not attracted to the freshly pruned trees at the time when these beetles are most active.  Anyone wishing to prune elm trees during the ban must obtain a permit.  Please call the City’s Parks Division at 306-975-3300 for information.
