The intersection at Victoria Avenue and Ash Street will be fully closed Wednesday, May 22 for water main rehabilitation. There will be no access to tharea during this work, which is expected to take two weeks to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Repairs to traffic signal lights at Warman Road and Assiniboine Drive are now complete. Normal operations have been fully restored at this intersection.

Yesterday afternoon, a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Warman Road and Assiniboine Drive caused considerable damage to the traffic control equipment and the concrete pad that supports it. This damage resulted in the intersection operating as a 3-way stop while crews worked to repair the concrete pad and restore the traffic control equipment.

The intersection at 33rd Street and Edmonton Avenue will operate as a four-way stop until mid-morning on Thursday, May 16. The traffic signal pole is in need of replacement, but crews must wait for the wind to calm before it can be installed. The westbound curb lane of 33rd Street leading up to the intersection is also closed.

With the warm weather comes renovation season. As you plan that new garage or addition, remember that any building and development work in Saskatoon must adhere by the new energy efficiency requirements that came into effect on January 1, 2019.

Drivers may expect delays on expressways including Circle Drive Monday to Thursday evenings from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for the next three to four weeks, with street sweeping beginning this Wednesday, May 15.

Drivers are asked to stay back a minimum of 15 metre (about 2.5 car lengths) and to use extreme caution, slowing to 60 km/h, when passing. The street sweeping vehicles will travel with a Saskatoon Police Service escort to enforce speeding and other work zone infractions. On and off ramps will be temporarily closed while sweeping is being completed.

The City of Saskatoon is getting provincial funding to create a more visible pedestrian crossing at Clarence Avenue and 14th Street. The $45,000 grant, funded through photo speed enforcement proceeds, will go toward pavement markings, signage, special illumination and pedestrian-activated amber flashing beacons.

The Kinsmen Park Archway Sign located at the intersection of Kinsmen Avenue and 25th Street will undergo upgrades.  The Archway Sign was listed in the Kinsmen Park Master Plan as an item that should be assessed with the intent of preserving and restoring the landmark, which has been part of the park since the 1950s.  

Within the Archway Sign upgrade project, the sign will be removed from its foundation, and taken off site to be sand-blasted and re-painted.  The masonry piers and support structure will be replaced and the sign will be re-installed.

Lawson Civic Centre opened its doors to the public on March 11, 1989, and is currently one of six leisure centres operated by the City of Saskatoon.  It features a tropical pool and wave pool, fitness facilities, meeting and recreational space, and the Rusty MacDonald Branch Library all under one roof.

The public is invited to participate in Lawson Civic Centre’s 30th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.  Cupcakes and coffee (10:00.a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and a balloon twister (4:50 p.m. to 6:50 p.m.) will be part of the event.

The accessible play structure in WW Ashley Park, located off Taylor Street East between Lansdowne Avenue and Clarence Avenue South, will be closed from Monday, May 13 to Thursday, May 16 while the rubberized surface under the play equipment is being repaired and a protective coating is applied to the material.  The revitalized play surface will create a safer play area and maximize the life span of the play equipment.

There were fewer complaints about fire pits following last year’s bylaw change, a City report says.

“Overall, the past year has gone as expected with the rate of complaints dropping off slightly; we’re effectively using the tools available to us for enforcement action,” says Fire Chief Morgan Hackl. “Because of the increased enforcement, we have had a reduction in the number of repeated complaints to the same locations.”

The Standing Policy Committee on Planning, Development and Community Services will consider the report at its regular meeting Monday, May 13.

City Council is investing over $61 million this year for rehabilitation, maintenance and operations to make more of Saskatoon’s streets, bridges and sidewalks, smoother, safer and longer-lasting.

“That’s more roads repaved, sidewalks rebuilt, streets swept, and snow and ice cleared,” says Angela Gardiner, General Manager of Transportation and Construction.

“Over the past five years, we’ve made building better roads our top priority. The goal is to rehabilitate Saskatoon’s roads and continue to maintain them appropriately so they last.”

As work nears completion on the McOrmond Drive and College Drive interchange, crews will be closing the loop that allows eastbound traffic on College Drive to go northbound on McOrmond Drive for approximately two days. The loop will be closed from Saturday, May 4 until mid-afternoon Monday, May 6.  

To go northbound on McOrmond Drive, eastbound traffic on College Drive will continue onto the exit ramp and turn left at the stop sign on top of the interchange.

City Council will put into practice a new Code of Ethics following recommendations from the Saskatoon Municipal Review Commission (MRC) and a series of Council discussions.  Council approved Bylaw 9537, The Code of Ethical Conduct for Members of City Council Bylaw, 2019 (Code) at its regular business meeting April 29, 2019.

The Code unites the 2012 Code of Conduct, the 2017 Code of Ethics Bylaw, and the recommendations of the MRC’s Municipal Code of Conduct Committee Report, dated February 11, 2016.

The City is pleased to announce Artists in Place: The Bunkhouse Project (The Bunkhouse Project), an artist-in-residence pilot program taking place in the historic Bunkhouse at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo. 

Sponsored by the City of Saskatoon, with a grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Artists in Communities program, several local artists were selected to set up studios in the Bunkhouse for a year-long residency.
