The City of Saskatoon, through its Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, recognizes achievement for heritage preservation in Saskatoon through the presentation of awards every second year.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 30, 2019. Any project completed prior to September 1, 2019 is eligible, including non-award winning submissions from past years.

The City of Saskatoon is hosting an open house to share the results of the Kinsmen Park Parking Strategy and Transportation Study, which was conducted earlier this year with the goal of providing a comprehensive parking, motor traffic and active transportation analysis for Kinsmen Park and area.

The open house will feature a come and go format and will be held on Monday, November 18, 2019, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the downstairs meeting room of the Frances Morrison Library. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Environment Canada issued a Freezing Rain Warning early this morning, anticipating rain to continue periodically until noon today.  

Freezing rain creates icy road conditions in temperatures below zero and drivers and sidewalk users should use caution moving around Saskatoon today. Overnight, City crews applied salt to prevent icing on high-traffic priority streets, and 16 sanders continue today treating ice with salt.

Starting November 12, 2019, a cable upgrade will be taking place within the area of Silverwood Dog Park. This project is expected to take approximately one to three weeks, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances. The park is scheduled to remain open to the public during this time. Dog park users are asked to take extra caution.

A record of Saskatoon’s former residents who fell in military service during the Second World War and in the following years is on display at City Hall.

“We’re so pleased to have this volume and be able to have it where it can be seen by more people,” says City Archivist Jeff O’Brien.  “It joins the First World War Book of Remembrance we already have at the archives and together they form such a vital community historical resource.”

As was the first book, the second volume is a gift to the City from the Military Institute of Saskatoon.

The City of Saskatoon is awaiting the decision of an Ontario Superior Court Justice on the return of City money fraudulently obtained in August.

The issue was considered in a Toronto courtroom Tuesday, November 5th

“The matter has been heard by the Court and no further actions can be taken on recovery efforts until we know its decision,” says City Manager Jeff Jorgenson. “So we can’t speculate on how long it will take or what the decision will be.”

Saskatoon has one of the safest water supplies in North America.  The vast majority of Saskatoon neighbourhoods do not have lead line connections.

However, a goal to replace lead pipes that link older homes and businesses to Saskatoon’s main water supply is progressing as planned. In 2017, the City committed to removing all underground pipes containing lead and install lead-free ones within 10 years. The work is being done in conjunction with necessary water main and road upgrades.

"At around 5 a.m. today there was a report of erratic driving involving a City of Saskatoon one ton sanding truck. At this point, there have been no reports of injuries, property damage or theft.

The driver, a City of Saskatoon employee, was detained by Police.

Separate investigations by the City of Saskatoon and Saskatoon Police Service are underway."

Saskatoon roads and sidewalks are at risk of ice forming overnight if the temperature drops and stays below zero. The rain this afternoon and flurries this evening could cause slippery conditions on sidewalks and residential streets for the morning commute.

City crews are spreading salt to prevent ice on Circle Drive and priority streets, and are using a combination of salt and sand for traction at high risk locations.

The City is preparing for its final round of Green Cart collections for 2019. From November 1 – 7, all subscribers will receive a bonus Green Cart collection on their scheduled pickup day, regardless of when their previous collection was performed. Carts should be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. to ensure successful collection.

For the safety and protection of residents and homeowners on the east riverbank, new regulations are being proposed to support continued development of riverbank areas.  The City has identified two zones on the east bank with existing ground conditions that may experience slope instability to be regulated on a go-forward basis.

Nutana

Almost six centimetres of snow fell in Saskatoon since Sunday afternoon, with potential for more snow overnight Monday. The City is declaring a snow event, which means contract graders will be called in to assist clearing all priority streets within the next 72 hours.

City crews already cleared 22nd Street, Idylwyld Drive, College Drive and 8th Street, and are making good progress on Circle Drive and other expressways.

Sanding and salting is also occurring on overpasses, bridges, busy intersections, and icy sections of road.

City crews are busy this morning with the increased snowfall experienced overnight. This weather has brought on winter driving conditions for road users, including slippery roads. City crews are clearing snow and applying salt and sand to aid traction on high-traffic roads. 

Drivers should slow down, use caution, and give extra time for this morning's commute, this weather may cause streets, bridge decks, freeway ramps, overpasses and high-traffic intersections to be icy and snowpacked.
