Spring is a busy time of year for projects in the yard, garden, and around the home.  Homeowners and contractors with property adjacent to a civic park may wish to use the park as an access point for deliveries, equipment, and/or vehicles related to their projects.

The City would like to remind homeowners and contractors that a permit is required before accessing a park to ensure the safety and enjoyment of these spaces for everyone.

The City reminds residents that the provincial ban on pruning elm trees is in effect until Saturday, August 31, 2019.

The ban ensures that elm bark beetles, which transmit Dutch elm disease (DED), are not attracted to the freshly pruned trees at the time when these beetles are most active.  Anyone wishing to prune elm trees during the ban must obtain a permit.  Please call the City’s Parks Division at 306-975-3300 for information.

Following more than three years of technical work and public engagement, Saskatoon City Council will receive reports with recommendations on possible routes for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the Downtown Active Transportation (AT) Network.

Starting Monday morning, April 15, Faithfull Avenue between 64th Street East and 66th Street East will be closed for work on a water and sewer connection. This work is expected to take two days to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

A major rehabilitation of the Senator Sid L. Buckwold Bridge starts on Monday, April 15. The work will happen over the next two construction seasons to minimize the impact on traffic and eliminate the need for a full bridge closure.

Beginning Monday and through to the end of October, the lanes leaving downtown will be closed and traffic will be diverted to the other side. The walkway will remain open.

The City of Saskatoon is ready to welcome golfers to Holiday Park Golf Course (Phone:  306-975-3325, 1630 Avenue U South) on Friday, April 12th.  9 holes will open at 12:00 p.m. and tee time reservations will be accepted both online and by phone.

The driving ranges at Holiday Park and Silverwood are currently open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., daily.

Opening dates for Wildwood and Silverwood golf courses will be announced soon.  For more information about any of the City’s golf courses please visit saskatoon.ca/golf.

The City’s two compost depots are set to open in time for spring clean-up. Residents are invited to drop off leaves, grass, sod, topsoil, garden refuse, pumpkins, and non-elm branches, stumps and tree trimmings at no cost. This helps keep yard waste out of the Landfill and produces a high quality, nutrient-rich compost and mulch that is used to keep Saskatoon parks and community gardens healthy and beautiful.

With warming temperatures, median and street sweeping shifts into full gear this week. Simultaneously, pothole patching crews get started with hot mix asphalt for permanent repairs.

“We’re officially in spring cleaning mode with sweepers moving through high-traffic priority streets and crews filling broken pavement with hot-mix asphalt,” says Brodie Thompson, Acting Director of Roadways, Fleet & Support.

The future is bright in Saskatoon! As part of the Student Action for a Sustainable Future (SASF) Student Showcase, held on April 9 at the Western Development Museum, 320 grade 4-8 students from across the city displayed their environmental initiative results from work conducted over the past 6 months. The topics they explored ranged from water and energy conservation; waste reduction; active transportation; local food production; biodiversity protection; and reductions to greenhouse-gas emissions. Some of these innovative projects included:

The National Day of Remembrance of the Battle of Vimy Ridge is held on April 9.  In recognition, flags at all City of Saskatoon facilities will be flown at half-mast today.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place in 1917 and was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps went into battle together.

The Landfill’s extended summer hours of operation will begin on Monday, April 8, 2019. The facility, located off of Valley Road, south of 11th Street, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Residents and commercial customers are reminded to follow all signs and/or instructions from Landfill staff. For information about rates and materials not accepted at the Landfill, visit Saskatoon.ca/landfill.

The City of Saskatoon has selected 11 neighbourhoods to conduct traffic reviews this year.

The Neighbourhood Traffic Review (NTR) program, addresses transportation related concerns like speeding and pedestrian safety on a neighbourhood-wide basis. The City works collaboratively with neighbourhood residents to develop recommendations for improvement.

Construction of the new McOrmond Drive and College Drive interchange resumes on Wednesday, April 3, 2019.

This phase of work includes removing the temporary ramp currently in place to accommodate southbound traffic on McOrmond Drive going westbound on College Drive towards the university and downtown. Removing the temporary ramp is necessary so crews can start building the permanent southbound lanes.

The City of Saskatoon, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, Saskatoon Transit, and Meewasin have teamed up to host an open house highlighting the projects happening around Kinsmen Park and area.

The open house is a come and go format and will be held Tuesday, April 16 at TCU Place (Gallery D – Main Floor) from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Highway 16 westbound at 71st Street has now reopened.  It had closed late Monday afternoon due to a broken signal arm blocking the lanes. Traffic is flowing normally.

For updates on construction projects anytime, refer to the Road Restrictions and Construction Projects interactive map. Road users are reminded to reduce speeds, stay alert and mind posted signage and barriers when encountering a construction zone.
