In response to the early heat wave this week, the City’s Emergency Management Organization (EMO) has activated the Saskatoon Heat Response Strategy to support citizens in Saskatoon, especially those vulnerable to the heat.

The City continues to replace the water and sewer lines in two of Saskatoon’s oldest neighbourhoods. This year, the priority is the City Park and Riversdale neighbourhoods where work has been underway for a few weeks.

“The water and sewer lines in these neighbourhoods are about 100 years old,” says Matt Jurkiewicz (yurr-KEV’-ich), Interim Director, Construction and Design. “The replacement projects include upgrading the pipes and also replacing the lead connections to homes that are also outdated.”

Cool off this summer at any of the City of Saskatoon spray pads in various locations around the city.  Summer spray pads will open for the season on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at 10 a.m., and will be operational daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please note, spray pad sites located on or near school grounds have timers and are set to turn spray features off during recess and lunch breaks.  Shut-off times will vary according to individual school schedules.  All spray pads are activated by push buttons located near the spray features.

The City’s Summer Leisure Mini Guide (Mini Guide) will be conveniently delivered to households with the weekly Bridges publication on Friday, May 31, 2019.  It will also be available for pick up at any indoor Leisure Centre or Saskatoon Public Library location, and will be available online on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

Saskatoon Transit’s 2nd Annual Student Art Contest closes Thursday, May 30. Grade three and seven students can submit artwork representing Active Transportation to their teachers by the end of the school day. Teachers must email Saskatoon Transit (transit.services@Saskatoon.ca) by 5:00 p.m to let us know you have a pick-up. 

Two winners will be chosen, one from each grade to have their art displayed on City transit buses throughout the summer.

Starting Wednesday, May 29 at 8:00 a.m., 1st Avenue North between 24th Street East and 25th Street East will be closed for roadway patching. This work is expected to take one day to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.

At its meeting today, City Council approved Bylaw No. 9572, The Traffic Amendment Bylaw, 2019 that increases the city-wide on-street parking limit from 36 hours to 72 hours, except as otherwise indicated by a sign or provided for in the bylaw.

This Amendment does not change the requirements for recreational vehicles or parking restrictions for street maintenance.  Recreational vehicles will continue to have a 36-hour restriction and then must not park on a city street for at least 48 hours.

Spring is a busy time of year for projects in the yard, garden, and around the home.  Homeowners and contractors with property adjacent to a civic park may wish to use the park as an access point for deliveries, equipment, and/or vehicles related to their projects.

The City would like to remind homeowners and contractors that a permit is required before accessing a park to ensure the safety and enjoyment of these spaces for everyone.

The City is twinning a section of Wanuskewin Road north of the 71st Street intersection beginning on Monday, May 27 at 9:00 a.m. Wanuskewin Road will remain open with two-way traffic maintained in the northbound lanes. The project is expected to take approximately five months to complete, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances.
