Combined Head & Power Plant at St. Paul's Hospital
Saskatoon Light & Power (SL&P) in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) shall design and build a 1 megawatt Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon. The project shall utilize two 500 kilowatt CHP generators to provide year round heating for the domestic water and summer heat loads, and generate a portion of the electrical energy used by the hospital.
SL&P and SHA shall jointly co-own and operate the CHP power plant. The power plant is expected to be operational in 2021 and generate annually approximately 8,600 megawatt-hours of electricity and 41,000 gigajoule of useable heat from the more efficient system, and reduce annual GHG emissions by approximately 36% (or 2,300 tonnes CO2 eq.) when compared with the existing system at the hospital.
